A video circulating on social media depicts a crowd vociferously shouting “voleur” (thief) while soldiers escort a white man from a building.

The accompanying claim suggests that this footage captures the French ambassador to Niger being forcibly removed from the embassy. However, upon closer examination, several discrepancies emerge.

The attire of the individuals in the video is inconsistent with typical clothing in Niger, a predominantly Muslim nation. The absence of customary veils for women, a common practice among Muslim women in Niger, is a noticeable deviation. Additionally, the intermingling of men and women in the video is atypical for a Muslim-majority country like Niger.

Comparing photos of the man in the video with the actual French ambassador, Sylvain Itté, reveals that they do not resemble each other.

Upon investigation, it was found that the incident actually occurred in Gabon, Central Africa, involving Prof Lee White, not Sylvain Itté. White served as Gabon’s minister of water and environment, focusing on climate change and land-use planning.

Lastly, the building featured in the video does not match the French embassy in Niamey, Niger’s capital. A reverse image search identified the structure as the ministry of water resources and forestry building in Libreville, Gabon.
