After President Bola Tinubu suspended him from his role as the chairman of the anti-graft agency, Bawa regained his freedom several months later.

Bawa’s suspension stemmed from serious allegations of office misconduct leveled against him, as reported by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the SGF office, explained that this action was taken to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.

Following his suspension and subsequent arrest by the DSS on June 14, former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle accused Bawa of attempting to extort $2 million from him.

However, the former EFCC chief refuted these claims made by the Minister of State for Defence.

President Tinubu appointed Abdulkarim Chukkol, the Commission’s Director of Operations, to serve as the acting chair of the EFCC. Then, on October 12, the Nigerian leader appointed Ola Olukoyede as the agency’s new head.

Olukoyede’s initial appointment is for a renewable term of four years, as stated by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale. Ajuri further mentioned that Olukoyede’s confirmation came approximately a week after Bawa’s resignation.
