Ondo Court Rocked by Teen’s Admission In Fatal Phone Theft Incident
In a shocking revelation at the Ondo State Magistrates’ Court in Akure, 18-year-old Mubarak Akadiri disclosed a chilling account of events leading to the death of Sidikat Adamolekun, his mother’s employer. Akadiri admitted to committing the heinous act after being caught stealing Adamolekun’s phone.
The tragic incident, which occurred in Arigidi Akoko, Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo, saw the teenager allegedly perpetrate the murder of the 63-year-old retired headmistress in November. Unfolding during court proceedings on Thursday, November 30, 2023, the suspect, whose mother served as the late headmistress’s housemaid, was promptly apprehended by state police operatives.
The charge against Akadiri detailed the harrowing events, stating that he fatally struck Adamolekun with a wooden stool during the phone theft, leading to her demise. The prosecutor emphasized the gravity of the offense under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006, citing the unlawful killing and phone theft valued at N66,000.00.
In a disturbing confession, Akadiri, without legal representation, narrated the sequence of events that transpired. “I went to the house to work, but I stole her Samsung phone. When caught, I resorted to hitting her with a wooden stool in an attempt to escape,” he confessed remorsefully.
Regrettably, despite the victim’s cries for help, the situation escalated as Akadiri continued to strike her until she succumbed to her injuries.
The prosecution urged the court to remand the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre while awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions. Responding to the request, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni granted the remand application, ordering Akadiri’s detention at the correctional center until the DPP’s advice surfaces.
The case adjourned until March 15, 2024, for further proceedings, marking a tragic chapter in a story that began with a petty theft and spiraled into a fatal confrontation.
