Breaking News: Government Initiates Swift Increase In Minimum Wage
In a groundbreaking move, the New Zealand government has declared a two percent increase in the adult minimum wage rate, set to take effect from April 1…..CONTINUE READING
The new rate will be 23.15 NZ dollars, equivalent to 14.12 U.S. dollars, per hour. Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke Van Velden emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the income of low-wage workers while maintaining employment-friendly labor market conditions.
Van Velden acknowledged the cautious approach, considering significant economic changes such as high net migration rates, constrained consumer spending, and subdued economic growth affecting the labor market. Despite low unemployment, there has been a softening in the labor market.
The minimum wage, when measured as a ratio to the median wage, has increased from 62 percent in June 2017 to 72 percent in June 2023. However, the adjustment is seen as posing challenges for businesses in terms of pay raises and hiring, and the Labor Party criticized the increase as “tiny,” citing the current economic conditions.
Van Velden clarified that the adjustment considered the current economic scenario and historical increases to prevent distortions in wage relativities with other earners. Training and starting wages will continue at 80 percent of the adult minimum wage rate.
