A total of 58 burial sites at the Clermont-d’Excideuil cemetery were found covered in graffiti, including phrases like ‘Submit to Allah’ and ‘Happy Ramadan, non-Muslims’.
The vandalism, discovered on Monday morning, shocked the neighborhood. Images of the graffiti depict Islamic messages sprayed in black and white paint across graves and doors.
The Mayor of Clermont d’Excideuil, Claude Eymery, stumbled upon the defaced cemetery the next morning and immediately notified the police, filing a complaint.
The graffiti desecrated not only graves but also the war memorial, the church door, a Calvary, and a fountain. Among the disturbing messages was one proclaiming ‘France is already Allah’s’ and another wishing ‘Happy Ramadan’ to non-Muslims.
Residents expressed shock and trauma over the incident, with many feeling deeply disturbed by the violation of their loved ones’ resting places.
Alexandre Caillé of the SOS Calvaires association emphasized the symbolic significance of the vandalism, particularly on war memorials honoring those who fought for France’s freedom.
The defacement has left the community in disbelief, with residents hoping for swift justice and emphasizing the importance of mutual respect regardless of religious beliefs.
