In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has suspended all events at the facility and ordered its comprehensive rehabilitation……READ ALSO Nyesom Wike Is The First From Nigeria’s Southern Region To Become FCT Minister? – Fact Emerge
Wike made this announcement following his inspection of the ICC on Monday, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the center’s condition. He emphasized the need for a holistic renovation to bring it up to international standards.
The minister highlighted the deficiencies observed during recent events held at the ICC, including poor lighting and infrastructure, which he deemed unacceptable for an international venue.
Wike disclosed that the FCT Administration had terminated the contract of the firm previously responsible for managing the ICC, opting instead to engage Julius Berger for the center’s immediate renovation.
Describing the ICC as falling short of international standards, Wike emphasized the urgency of rehabilitating the facility to restore its reputation as a premier conference venue. He announced the cancellation of all bookings to facilitate the renovation process.
Julius Berger, the company responsible for constructing the ICC, has been tasked with completing the renovation within an eight-month timeline. The goal is to transform the ICC into a world-class venue that Nigerians and the international community can take pride in.
The minister expressed confidence in the newly appointed Managing Director of Abuja Investment Company (AIC), Amb. Maureen Tamuno, to oversee the management of the refurbished ICC effectively.
While Wike refrained from assigning blame for the center’s deterioration, he emphasized the need to focus on moving forward and delivering a first-rate facility to the nation.
The appointment of Amb. Maureen Tamuno, a seasoned public servant and diplomat, to head the AIC signals the government’s commitment to revitalizing key infrastructural assets in the FCT.
The renovation of the ICC represents a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to host international events and conferences, further bolstering its standing on the global stage.
