Electricity Workers Urge Tinubu Government To Roll Back 245% Tariff Hike
The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to reverse the recent 245% increase in electricity tariffs imposed by distribution companies……READ ALSO Electricity Workers Strike: FG Gives Update (DETAILS)
Nnamdi Ajibo, the National Secretary of the Association, conveyed this demand in a statement issued on Monday in response to the tariff hike affecting Band A electricity consumers.
Last week, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission sanctioned a tariff hike specifically targeting Band A customers.
Expressing their disapproval, the SSAEAC emphasized that the government’s actions in Nigeria’s power sector did not justify such a drastic tariff escalation.
Describing the hike as both insensitive and unacceptable, the Association highlighted that achieving all of Tinubu’s administration’s renewed agenda goals within a year was impractical.
Furthermore, the workers urged the government to rescind the failed privatization of the power sector.
“We insist on an immediate return to the previous tariff rates, recognizing the substantial rise in exchange rates that has significantly impacted the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.
“The implementation of the renewed agenda cannot be rushed. Globally, no nation treats its populace in this manner and anticipates silence.
“There’s merit in subsidizing electricity and other vital aspects of national life. The federal government must promptly reconsider the entire privatization process and create a conducive environment to support businesses before seeking competent managers to oversee the sector’s management,” the statement concluded.
