Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, Returns To EFCC Custody Amid Fourth Arraignment

Justice Rahman Oshodi made this decision following Emefiele’s arraignment on 23 counts, including allegations of abuse of office and corruption during his tenure at CBN.
The EFCC accused Emefiele of misusing his position to illegally allocate funds amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion. Alongside him, Henry Isioma-Omoile was also arraigned, facing accusations related to accepting illicit gifts from business agents. Both men pleaded not guilty.
Emefiele was ordered detained in EFCC’s custody, while Isioma-Omoile was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.
The court is set to reconvene on Thursday, April 11, 2024, to deliberate on their bail applications.
This marks Emefiele’s return to EFCC’s detention, following a previous 151-day period spent in custody between the EFCC and the Department of State Services. Indications from his legal team suggest another impending arraignment between April 25 and 26, making it the fourth criminal case against him by the Federal Government since his removal from office last June.
Emefiele faces allegations of abusing authority by allocating foreign exchange without bids, accepting illicit funds, and other corruption charges. The case is adjourned till April 11 for bail ruling and trial commencement.
