During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obaseki revealed that the prevailing political calculations in Edo State did not align with Shaibu’s bid to assume leadership.
Expressing his commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Edo people, Obaseki emphasized that he couldn’t risk backing Shaibu’s ambition due to the potential risks it posed.
The governor clarified, “I did not understand where the ambition was coming from because it was clear that the odds were not in his favour in terms of succeeding me, and I made it very clear.”
Obaseki underscored the paramount importance of protecting the welfare of Edo citizens, a responsibility that influenced his decision-making process regarding Shaibu’s aspirations.
The rift between Obaseki and Shaibu emerged following the latter’s declaration of gubernatorial ambition, leading to a fracture in their erstwhile alliance. Shaibu’s subsequent impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly, allegedly for leaking government information, further exacerbated the strained relationship between the two former allies.
As Obaseki elucidates his stance on Shaibu’s succession bid, the political landscape in Edo State continues to evolve, with implications for the future trajectory of governance in the region.
