Nigerians Panic As Detained IPOB-Leader Nnamdi Kanu Cites Legal-Barriers To Trial In Nigerian Courts
Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has explained why he believes he cannot be tried in any Nigerian court, referencing Section 15 of the Nigeria Extradition Act. Kanu made this statement following the dismissal of his request for bail or transfer from the Department of State Services custody to a prison or house arrest by the Federal High Court in Abuja….CONTINUE READING
Kanu argued that any attempt to try him would violate the Terrorism Prohibition and Prevention Act, which he claims bars his trial in Nigeria. He stated, “Anyone standing in trial or coming to try me is a terrorist. That is what the law says, not me. Section 2, Subsection 3F of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act.”
He attributed the delays in his case to these legal restrictions, asserting that his trial would constitute an act of terrorism and violate international treaties. Kanu maintained that his previous bail conditions were disrupted by an invasion of his home, and he was subsequently kidnapped from Kenya and brought back to Nigeria illegally.
During the court ruling, Justice Nyako noted that Kanu had previously jumped bail and his sureties had been discharged due to their inability to locate him. She advised Kanu to seek redress at the Court of Appeal.
