Peter-Obi Confirms Unity Between Yorubas And Igbos Following 2023 General-Election (View Text)
Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emphasized the unity demonstrated between the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups during the last general election, dispelling notions of animosity between them.
Speaking at the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy (NACJD) Courageous Citizen Award ceremony in Abuja on Saturday, Obi highlighted the collective resolve of Nigerians across tribal and religious divides during the 2023 polls. He asserted that the election underscored a broader Nigerian agenda rather than being solely driven by religious or ethnic considerations.
Obi underscored the significance of the 2023 election as a moment of national unity, where Nigerians transcended ethnic and religious boundaries to demand change. He commended the participation of notable figures like former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Pa Ayo Adebanjo, emphasizing their pivotal roles in championing a new Nigeria.
Addressing misconceptions about inter-ethnic relations, Obi stated, “I am saying this to correct the impression that the Yorubas hate Igbo people.” He pointed to the sacrifices made by individuals across the country to advocate for a better Nigeria, emphasizing the desire for progress and change.
In the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi finished third behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite his position, Obi garnered significant support, particularly from Nigerian youths who resonated with his vision for the country.
Obi’s political movement, known as Obidient, attracted widespread support across Nigeria, reflecting his appeal and influence beyond regional and ethnic boundaries.
The recognition of the unity exhibited during the 2023 election serves as a testament to the resilience and collective aspirations of Nigerians for a better and more inclusive society. Obi’s remarks underscore the importance of fostering national cohesion and solidarity to address the challenges facing the nation and pave the way for sustainable development and progress.
