Transforming Edo State : Senator Okpebholo’s Vision For Water And Food Security
Senator Monday Okpebholo’s administration is committed to revitalizing access to clean water in Edo State. By securing proper funding for water projects and enhancing the distribution network, the administration aims to provide every community with potable pipe-borne water. This initiative is crucial in eradicating water-borne diseases and promoting public health across the state.
Edo State has a rich history of rice farming, with areas like Agbede, Ekpoma, and Illushi once being prominent rice producers. Senator Okpebholo plans to rejuvenate these agricultural hubs by introducing advanced farming technologies. The administration will supply farmers with modern seedlings and fertilizers, and offer retraining programs to help them adapt to contemporary agricultural practices. Establishing cooperatives and farmers markets will facilitate regular interactions among farmers, consumers, researchers, and the public, fostering a robust agricultural community.
The state will also leverage its existing agricultural research institutions, such as the Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), to drive agricultural development. Senator Okpebholo, being a farmer himself, understands the importance of accessible farming tools and plans to support local manufacturing of these tools for small-scale farmers. The creation of produce boards and centers across Edo State will streamline agricultural processes and increase food production, creating numerous employment opportunities for the youth.
Furthermore, the administration will encourage private sector investment in agriculture, promoting the establishment of factories and agro-industries that can capitalize on the state’s abundant crops, including pineapples, oranges, mangoes, plantains, bananas, maize, and cassava. By improving the quality of farming practices, Edo State aims to meet both local and industrial demands, making it an attractive destination for agro-industrial ventures.
