According to Vanguard News on August 14, 2024, the video, which initially sparked outrage and concern, was part of a reenactment meant to entertain and not a genuine act of passport destruction.

In a follow-up video posted on Instagram, the man, accompanied by his children, offered an apology and sought understanding from the public. He assured viewers that his wife did not actually tear his passport and that their portrayal was intended as a creative reenactment of someone else’s story. The couple emphasized their commitment to respecting Nigerian laws and confirmed that their passport remains intact.

This clarification comes after the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) initiated an investigation into the viral footage, which showed the woman allegedly destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The NIS identified the individuals involved and invited them for further questioning. They warned that if the allegations proved true, the act would violate Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, with penalties outlined in Section 10(h).
