with the House Committee on Works, Umahi painted a grim picture of the nation’s road conditions, lamenting that some Nigerian roads have deteriorated so badly they no longer have potholes but “boreholes.”

The Minister urged the Committee to consider significantly increasing the Ministry’s budget allocation to tackle the country’s pressing road infrastructural needs. He passionately appealed for the government to borrow funds, emphasizing that infrastructure development is key to national economic recovery and growth.

“₦800 billion is insufficient. It cannot even scratch the surface of our road needs,” Umahi said. “We need your support to help Mr. President secure the funds required to transform our infrastructure and make Nigeria great again.”

Highlighting the economic impact of robust infrastructure, Umahi stated that borrowing funds to improve roads and other essential facilities is a strategic move to boost economic activities and alleviate hunger in the nation.

“When a country is in recession, borrowing to fund infrastructure is the way out. Good roads create jobs, enable trade, and stimulate economic activities, which will ultimately end the hunger we’re battling with,” he explained.

In response, Akin Alabi, the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, assured Umahi that the Committee would investigate the rationale behind the Ministry’s low budget allocation. He pledged to summon the Minister of Finance and the Head of the Budget Office for clarification.
