and social progress.
In a statement released by its Executive Secretary, Mohammed Ibrahim, on Sunday, NADF affirmed its commitment to revolutionizing the agricultural landscape of Nigeria.
Ibrahim made these remarks during the 32nd Convocation Ceremony at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday.
“Agriculture is the heartbeat of our nation,” Ibrahim said, emphasizing its fundamental role in fostering innovation, economic growth, and societal transformation.
“It goes beyond cultivating the land; it’s about nurturing ideas, instigating change, and seizing opportunities.”
Ibrahim also highlighted NADF’s swift intervention in addressing a severe epidemic that devastated 80% of the ginger crops in Nigeria’s growing belt. The Fund supported affected farmers by helping them transition to alternative crops, including maize and sorghum, to minimize the impact of the epidemic and aid in recovery.
The NADF Executive Secretary further discussed partnerships with global organizations such as GIZ and NITDA to implement climate-smart agriculture practices and incorporate advanced technologies like UAVs, IoT, and blockchain into farming, with the aim of enhancing productivity, sustainability, and resilience.
Ibrahim also addressed the challenges within the sector, stressing the need for localized, demand-driven research. He announced the completion of a comprehensive Needs Assessment of Agricultural Research Institutes and Federal Colleges of Agriculture, intended to identify commercially viable projects capable of attracting private investment.
Speaking to graduates, Ibrahim shared a hopeful vision for the future of agriculture in Nigeria.
“You are the disruptors of tomorrow,” he said, encouraging them to embrace agriculture as a modern, profitable, and rewarding career.
“Imagine millions of farmers cultivating crops that fuel industries, stabilize communities, reduce poverty, and increase exports.”
He urged graduates to view themselves not only as farmers but as nation-builders tasked with unlocking the vast transformative potential of agriculture in Nigeria.
Ibrahim’s speech reflected a forward-thinking vision for the country’s agricultural sector, one that focuses on innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth.
“Agriculture is not just a livelihood; it is a catalyst for national transformation,” he concluded.
“We are more than farmers; we are nation-builders.”
