Tinubu Joins African Leaders In Ethiopia For Crucial AU Talks (See Highlights)

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu touched down in Ethiopia on Thursday night to participate in the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government.

Upon arrival, Tinubu was welcomed by Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol, Eshetu Legesse, alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu.

A statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that Ambassador Tuggar later briefed Tinubu on key aspects of the summit, highlighting some significant diplomatic achievements for Nigeria. The briefing lasted until around 2 AM on Friday.

Among Nigeria’s recent diplomatic wins:

• Ambassador Bankole Adeoye was re-elected as the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security.
• Nigeria retained its seat on the African Union Peace and Security Council, reaffirming its leadership and commitment to maintaining stability across the continent.

Key Agenda for the AU Summit

This year’s AU Summit is themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.” Discussions will focus on reparatory justice and racial healing.

Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a speech at the AU Peace and Security Council Summit, where deliberations will center on ongoing security challenges across Africa, including the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Additionally, he will participate in high-level meetings covering:

• Health financing
• The establishment of an Africa Credit Rating Agency
• Climate change policies

President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, February 17.
