Idem Joy, identified as the leader of the operation, was arrested alongside other suspects by operatives of the Ogun State Amotekun Corps at approximately 6:15 am on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Joy, originally from Akwa Ibom State, was accused of running a brothel in the Ifo Local Government Area, where 15 young women, some as young as 12, were allegedly forced into prostitution.

Investigations revealed that 14 of the victims were trafficked from Akwa Ibom, while others hailed from Cross River and Delta States. Reports further indicated that some of the victims were diagnosed with HIV.

Victims Speak Out

In an interview, 29-year-old Joy denied forcing the victims into prostitution, claiming they were aware of the nature of their work before their arrival. However, she admitted that only four of the victims were directly under her supervision, while others were managed by individuals known as Ivy, Success, and Auntie Oyinbo—whose real names remain unknown.

The arrest followed the escape of two victims, who later provided law enforcement with information about the illicit activities at the Railway Line Hotel in Ifo. Joy acknowledged that she had intended to report the missing girls to the police but was instead apprehended during a raid.

Fear and Intimidation Tactics

Rescued victims expressed fear of retaliation for speaking out. A 14-year-old victim, a junior secondary school dropout, disclosed that she was deceived into believing she would be employed as a salesgirl. Upon arrival, she was drugged and coerced into prostitution. She further alleged that Joy took samples of her hair as a means of control, threatening to use them against her if she attempted to escape.

Another victim, a 17-year-old girl trafficked into the state on November 7, 2024, recounted undergoing an oath ritual where she stood naked on a Bible. She was promised freedom after a year of service, along with a phone and a box of clothes. Both victims described working long hours, servicing multiple clients daily for as little as N1,000 to N5,000, with all earnings handed over to their supervisors.

Suspect’s Defense

In response to the allegations, Joy insisted that the oath-taking was merely a tactic to deter the girls from fleeing, denying any involvement in ritual practices. She further stated that she did not personally collect used tissues or condoms but admitted to overseeing financial transactions on behalf of the victims’ supervisors.

During the raid, security operatives recovered various incriminating items, including tissue papers, condoms, lubricants, illicit substances, and a total sum of N819,600.

Legal Implications and Law Enforcement Action

Legal experts and child protection advocates condemned the operation, emphasizing that minors cannot legally consent to s3xual activity. Barrister Adedamola Lapite, the Ogun State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, cited relevant laws, asserting that individuals under 18 cannot give consent, making the alleged crimes even more egregious.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) confirmed that the victims are receiving protective custody and psychological support. Ogun State Commander Abosede Jimoh revealed that some victims had tested positive for HIV, while one was found to be pregnant. She further emphasized that traffickers often confiscate victims’ phones and personal items to maintain control.

Government Commitment to Justice

Ogun State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating human trafficking and abuse. She pledged continued collaboration with law enforcement agencies and social welfare organizations to prevent future occurrences and protect vulnerable individuals.

As investigations continue, authorities have charged the key suspects to court, with efforts underway to rehabilitate and reintegrate the victims into society. The case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of human trafficking and the urgent need for vigilance in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable populations.
