Political Earthquake: Peter Obi’s Strong Ally Abandons Labour Party Amid Tensions

Oseloka Obaze, a key ally of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially resigned his membership from the party.

Obaze, a former United Nations diplomat and Secretary to the Anambra State Government during Obi’s tenure as governor, announced his resignation in a letter dated Sunday, addressed to the LP Chairman of Ochuche Ward 406, Ogbaru Local Government Area.

Having worked closely with Obi as both an adviser and senior party figure, Obaze cited persistent leadership crises at the national level as a major reason for his exit. He specifically referenced the unresolved factional disputes between Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman.

He also expressed strong disapproval over the conduct of the party’s governorship primary election held on April 5 in Awka, describing the exercise as deeply flawed.

“The processes, conduct, and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries… were riddled with glaring irregularities bordering on fraud and criminality,” Obaze stated in the letter. “It violated the party’s constitution, core values, and democratic principles.”

Consequently, he announced his complete dissociation from the Labour Party.

Notably, Obaze had previously left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022 — just one week before Peter Obi — to join the LP. He went on to become Obi’s campaign manager and a central strategist in the Obidient Movement.
