Tonye Cole, the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has declared that the presidential system of government is unsuitable for Nigeria.

During an interview on Channels Television, Cole stressed that Nigeria’s governance framework should reflect the country’s indigenous political heritage. He argued that political systems imported from the West, such as the American-style presidential model or the British parliamentary structure, are fundamentally incompatible with the African context.

“This American-style presidential system we’ve adopted needs to be reconsidered. Importing the UK’s parliamentary system won’t work either. These systems don’t align with who we are culturally,” he said.

Cole maintained that most African nations are dissatisfied with their current political systems because they conflict with traditional values and structures. He emphasized that successful countries like China and those in the Arab world have embraced systems rooted in their unique cultural and political realities, rather than adopting Western models.

“We need a Nigerian or African-specific political system. Before colonialism, before the slave trade, we had functioning governance systems that worked for our people. Why are we abandoning them? We know the path to take,” Cole stated.

He further pointed out that one of the major flaws of Nigeria’s current presidential system is that it can easily be manipulated by a select few, and it lacks the institutional strength to enforce accountability.

According to Cole, Nigeria continues to build institutions modeled after the British system, which he believes do not fit within the country’s cultural framework and societal dynamics.
