Just In: Kano State House Of Assembly Firm On Amending-Law Used To Depose Sanusi-Lamido As Emir (Details)

The Kano State House of Assembly has reiterated its commitment to amending the law that former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje utilized to depose Sanusi Lamido as Emir of Kano. A senior official of the Assembly affirmed this stance on Wednesday, expressing confidence in the lawmakers’ determination to proceed with the amendment….CONTINUE READING
The decision to revise the state’s emir’s deposition and appointment law was initially proposed by Hussien Dala, the majority leader and representative of the Dala constituency, during a plenary session on Tuesday.
In 2020, Ganduje removed Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, sparking controversy and legal battles.
Providing an update on the Assembly’s plans to amend the law, the official informed BBC Hausa that preparations had been in place for some time. He announced that a special session would be held on Thursday to consider and pass the amendment.
“We were ready for this a long time ago, and only God can stop this amendment. We wanted all these emirs to go 20 days after this administration was inaugurated, but here we are,” he stated.
However, dissent within the Assembly persists, particularly among some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Abdul Labaran Madari revealed to BBC Hausa that 12 APC members oppose the proposed amendment. Their objection stems from the condition that none of the five Emirates will be disbanded, and that the current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, should remain in office without being replaced by Muhammad Sanusi.
Despite the opposition from APC members, Madari highlighted that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) lawmakers hold sufficient numbers to push through the amendment. He also mentioned that the governing party has devised a strategy to dismantle the Bichi emirate and reinstate the ousted Emir Sanusi. According to Madari, the remaining Emirates would each have jurisdiction over three local government areas.
