Kano Protest: Yusuf Shocked By Extensive Property Damage

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano state has described as “shocking” the wanton looting and destruction of properties in his state during the #EndBadGovernance protest on August 1.

He spoke at the state judiciary complex, which was also vandalised by hoodlums who hijacked the supposed peaceful demonstration.

He has been moving round to see the scenes of destruction and assess levels of damage in the state, which was worst hit by the protest riots, according to the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Yusuf visited the judiciary complex on Tuesday, August 13, and was conducted round the property by the Chief Registrar of the Kano State High Court, Abdullahi Bayero, and other members of the judiciary.

Among the things vandalised and destroyed were vehicles parked at the premises.

“In continuation of my assessment visits, I was at the Kano State Judiciary Complex, which was vandalised by a hired mob on August 1.

“The wanton damage on the property and other valuables was shocking to see, and it severely impacts the ability of the courts to efficiently dispense justice,” Governor Yusuf tweeted on his official X handle.

The governor, however, promised to renovate and uplift the status of the judiciary complex to a more befitting condition.

“We shall not let the ruins of this unfortunate episode last longer,” he said and commended members of the Kano state judiciary for their “courage and dedication to the preservation of rule of law and justice.”

Earlier, the governor held an interactive session in Government House with traders under the aegis of the Kano Traders’ Association, to address various pressing concerns such as security, the economy, and social amenities.

During the meeting, the governor urged the traders to cooperate with the government in maintaining social amenities and ensuring appropriate refuse disposal in the state.

He condoled with the people over the destruction of properties by hoodlums and praised the traders for their proactive support in protecting their markets, which he said, saved the state from further damage.

“This proactiveness underscores the need for community policing and cooperation to address security issues in the state.

“I am pleased that normalcy is gradually being restored in Kano, as I hope that with the support demonstrated by our good people, this phase will be over and we shall forge ahead in our efforts to ensure that we provide a fair environment for all to prosper,” Yusuf, who has also relaxed the curfew he had imposed on the state to stop the escalation of violence, said.
