Oil prices recorded a sharp decline in early Asian trading on Monday following United States President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington would commence fresh negotiations with Iran in a bid to end the ongoing Middle East conflict and restore access through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

According to Ireporter Online, the development triggered a negative reaction in the international oil market as investors considered the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough and the reopening of the key shipping route, which plays a major role in global energy supply.

At about 2250 GMT on Sunday, Brent crude futures for September delivery dropped by 4.69 per cent to $83.81 per barrel, while the United States benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), declined by 4.67 per cent to $80.72 per barrel.

The fall in crude prices followed Trump’s announcement that fresh discussions with Iran would begin on Monday as part of efforts to resolve the crisis.

The US president disclosed that he had postponed planned military action against Iran to allow room for diplomatic negotiations.

“Now what we’re doing is we’re talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon,” Trump said.

However, he did not reveal the location of the talks or the individuals expected to participate in the negotiations.

The conflict, which began in late February after military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, has contributed to instability in the global energy market and raised concerns over crude oil supply disruptions.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transportation routes, has faced significant challenges due to the conflict, increasing fears of supply shortages and rising energy costs globally.

Meanwhile, Iran announced that it was nearing an agreement with Oman on establishing a new route through the Strait of Hormuz.

The move came shortly after the United States suspended major planned strikes against Iran as diplomatic efforts intensified.

Analysts believe that a possible reopening of the waterway or the creation of an alternative route could ease pressure on global energy supplies and continue to influence oil prices in the coming days.
