Witnesses confirmed the shooting and subsequent death of the officer to *The PUNCH*. However, differing accounts were given regarding the circumstances leading to the tragic event.
A trader, Amina Mohammed, described the scene: “There was tension and confusion at the Terminus Market and Ahmadu Bello Way behind Zenith Bank in Jos North this morning at about 11:30 am. Some task force officials and security agencies were enforcing the state law banning street hawking. During an attempt to maintain law and order, a Mobile Police Officer fired a shot and the stray bullet hit his colleague, causing panic. Although the victim was taken to the hospital, he later died.”
Another trader, Haruna, offered a different perspective, blaming the incident on hoodlums resisting the enforcement drive. “Many hoodlums were lurking around this morning. We heard a gunshot as security agents tried to disperse traders displaying their wares on the roadside against task force instructions. Unfortunately, the bullet hit one of the policemen, who later died after being rushed to the hospital,” he said.
The Plateau State Police Command Spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances. “Yes, we are aware of the incident at the Terminus Market. Right now, we are in the office of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board over the matter. So, we are investigating it,” Alfred said.
The tragic death highlights the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by enforcement teams in their efforts to maintain order and enforce laws in busy market areas.
