Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer, Lojay, has stated that The Headies awards are of greater significance to Nigerian artists than the Grammys and other international accolades.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, Lojay emphasized the importance of celebrating local recognition, stressing that Nigerian artists will never be a top priority for global award institutions.

He highlighted the disparity in award categorizations, citing singer Tems as an example. “Tems delivered one of the most beautiful R&B albums last year, yet she was placed in the Best African Music Performance category by the Grammys instead of being acknowledged in mainstream R&B or Best Female categories,” he said.

Lojay, who clinched the Best Male Vocal Performance award at the 17th Headies, explained that recognition within one’s cultural context carries more value. “We can’t be the focus in a space that isn’t ours. I would prefer a world where The Headies become so globally acclaimed that American artists aspire to win it and travel to Nigeria to receive their award,” he added.

The singer called on Nigerian artists to elevate and support local platforms. “We gain nothing from the Grammys being bigger than The Headies. But we all benefit when The Headies becomes bigger.”

Affirming his belief in the country’s potential, he concluded, “I’m a big believer in Nigeria. I believe in the strength and global potential of our people and our platforms. We must stop undervaluing what belongs to us.”
