IBBU Shut Down as Niger Govt Reacts to Student’s Killing

The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) in Lapai, following the killing of a student and growing security concerns in the area.

The directive was issued on Wednesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, during a briefing in Minna. He explained that the decision was prompted by a recent wave of insecurity, including the murder of a 300-level student, which triggered protests by students demanding justice and safer learning conditions.

“The safety of all citizens, particularly students, is a top priority for the government,” Usman stated, urging calm and full cooperation with ongoing investigations.

Usman assured the public that law enforcement agencies were actively investigating the incident and working to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. He added that the government was committed to restoring peace and stability around the university environment.

The student, Abdulkareem, was reportedly attacked and killed by suspected phone snatchers in his off-campus residence, two days before the shutdown. His death has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for better security around academic institutions.

Authorities are now taking steps to tighten security and ensure that similar incidents do not recur.
