Aba Billboard Tragedy: Advert Firm Pays Burial Cost, Compensation Talks Underway

The Abia State Advertising and Signage Agency (ABSAA) has confirmed that the advertising company behind the recent billboard collapse in Aba has fully covered the burial expenses of the deceased victim, while discussions on compensation for the injured and affected parties are ongoing with the state government.

Mrs. Victoria Dibunma Onwubiko, Managing Director and CEO of ABSAA, disclosed this in a press statement on Wednesday, addressing public concerns that the agency had neglected its responsibility following the incident.

She clarified that ABSAA had not abandoned the victims, but had been actively engaging the owners of the collapsed billboard structure, who have been cooperating with both the agency and relevant government authorities.

“So far, they have offset the full cost of the burial of the deceased and entered into advanced discussions with the government regarding compensation for the injured and other affected parties,” Onwubiko stated.

She also revealed that ABSAA is now reviewing all existing billboard structures across the state to ensure compliance with safety standards. Measures being implemented include intensified inspections, structural audits, and the removal of unauthorized or unsafe installations.

Onwubiko added that ABSAA personnel participated in the rescue and evacuation efforts on the day of the incident and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Abia State.

“In due course, we will provide the public with a detailed report on the outcome of our engagements and the steps being taken to ensure justice and reform,” she said.
