Gombe Approves N21.2bn Northern Bypass Project to Ease Traffic, Boost Economy

The Gombe State Government has approved a N21.2 billion contract for the construction of Phase One of the Northern Bypass Road, designed to ease traffic congestion, improve economic connectivity, and open up access to agricultural and business zones across the state.

Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Ethical Orientation, Hon. Mijinyawa Tilde, announced the approval following the 48th State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

The Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport, Engr. Usman Maijama’a Kallamu, explained that the 8.5km road will begin at Dukku Road near the grain silos, traverse the Agro-Livestock Development Zone, and end at Kurba Road. He said the project would enhance urban mobility and link vital economic hubs, adding, “This is a strategic step toward sustainable urban planning and agricultural logistics.”

Plans are also underway for the construction of a Southern Bypass Road to connect Liji and Kalshingi communities with the Gombe–Yola Road.

“These bypass roads will not only decongest the city but also stimulate trade and improve road safety,” Kallamu added.

Meanwhile, the Council approved the procurement of 10,000 metric tons (200,000 bags) of NPK 20:10:10 fertiliser valued at N8.8 billion for distribution ahead of the 2025 wet season. Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Barnabas Malle, said the move reflects Governor Yahaya’s emphasis on food security and proactive planning.

“This is the highest volume of fertiliser the state has ever procured, and it demonstrates our renewed focus on agricultural sustainability,” Malle said. The distribution is set to begin June 26, 2025.

On the healthcare front, the Council reviewed progress in the ongoing revitalisation of primary health centres across all 114 political wards. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, noted that 82 facilities have been earmarked for upgrade at a cost exceeding N3 billion. Upgrades will include labour wards, solar power systems, boreholes, perimeter fencing, and staff quarters.

Governor Yahaya’s administration, through these multiple sectoral investments, aims to strengthen Gombe’s infrastructure, boost agricultural output, and improve public health delivery.
