ENUGU POLICE RAID TRAFFICKERS’ DEN, FOIL HORRIFIC CHILD TRADE OPERATION!

The Enugu State Police Command has successfully dismantled multiple child-stealing and trafficking syndicates, rescuing six children and arresting ten suspects in a series of coordinated operations.

The command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, revealed this in a press statement released on Saturday, detailing that the breakthrough came after sustained intelligence-led efforts between June 30 and July 16.

According to iReporter Online, the operations exposed both local and transnational trafficking networks, with suspects engaging in the abduction, renaming, and sale of minors. Among the rescued were two children — 16-year-old Loveth Mfonobong, whose name was changed to Ifunanya Chiaha, and 12-year-old Benjamin Alex Okon, renamed Udochukwu Chiaha, One of the apprehended suspects confessed to purchasing Loveth in 2021 for ₦900,000 and Benjamin in 2024 for ₦1.4 million.

In another rescue mission on July 13, operatives from the Awkunanaw Division, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch group, intercepted a suspect carrying a one-year-and-seven-month-old boy.

The child was safely rescued and returned to his mother, while the suspect was taken into custody, according to iReporter Online.

Further investigations revealed a transnational trafficking case where a suspect was arrested on July 4 by officers from the Emene Division for transporting a 14-year-old girl to Ghana. The suspect admitted to the crime and assisted in the arrest of her male accomplice. Fortunately, the girl was rescued and reunited with her family, and both traffickers have since been remanded in custody.

Meanwhile, the Ogui Division cracked down on another syndicate involving a teenage girl, her mother, and another woman who collectively conspired to sell a newborn child for ₦1.4 million. In yet another disturbing case, the division arrested a woman caught attempting to flee with a baby from a salon. The child’s mother raised an alarm, prompting intervention from bystanders who subdued the suspect before the police arrived.

According to iReporter Online, the Enugu State Police have intensified efforts to eliminate all child trafficking rings in the region and are calling on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
