“No New States Approved!” – Akpabio Breaks Silence, Slams Rumour Peddlers

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has categorically debunked viral social media claims suggesting that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio responded to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), who sought clarification over growing public confusion and speculation.

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, Akpabio clarified that although the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 submissions proposing new states, none have passed beyond the early stages of legislative review.

“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation,” Akpabio explained.

He stressed that creating a state in Nigeria demands a complex constitutional process involving legislative approvals, referendums, and presidential assent — none of which have been completed for any of the current proposals.

He cautioned communities and advocacy groups against mobilizing or convening on the basis of speculative approvals that lack legal or procedural backing. “No new state has been approved by the Senate,” he stated firmly, warning that such misinformation is both premature and misleading.

Akpabio further advised Nigerians to rely only on verified information from official National Assembly communications.
