Nigeria Sends Local Crop Seeds to Space in Historic NASA Mission

Nigeria has made a landmark contribution to the global scientific community with the launch of six indigenous crop seeds aboard NASA’s Crew-11 mission, which is scheduled to lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) disclosed that the mission includes a payload known as the World Seeds Payload—an international agricultural experiment coordinated by Jaguar Space with participation from 11 countries, including Nigeria. This mission marks the first time a Nigerian biological experiment is being sent to the International Space Station aboard a crewed NASA flight.

Among the items included in the space-bound package are six locally sourced Nigerian crop seeds: okra, cowpea, guinea corn (sorghum), amaranth, maize, and melon. These were selected based on their agricultural relevance and nutritional value, with the aim of examining how they respond to microgravity conditions in space.

The scientific goal of the experiment is to study the seeds’ resilience and behavioral patterns in space, with a long-term vision of enabling sustainable agriculture in extraterrestrial environments. Researchers hope the findings will contribute to advancements in climate-adaptive farming, global food security, and agricultural innovation.

Olayinka Fagbemiro, NASRDA’s Assistant Director of International Cooperation and Linkages, is leading Nigeria’s participation in the project. She was responsible for overseeing every phase of the initiative, from the selection of crop seeds to logistical arrangements and formal international collaborations.

The agency described this milestone as a validation of years of domestic research on plant biology in simulated space conditions. It also emphasized Nigeria’s growing footprint in global space science and its commitment to inclusive, culturally grounded scientific contributions on a planetary scale.
