Displaced Nigerian Youths Turn Trauma into Triumph, Graduate Against the Odds

Several internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing at the International Christian Centre in Uhogua, Edo State, have defied severe hardship and psychological trauma to graduate from Nigerian universities, with some recently called to the Bar.

According to iReporter Online, many of the IDPs—originally children and orphans displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State over a decade ago—arrived at the camp with little hope for a future. Today, their stories reflect remarkable resilience, determination, and academic excellence.

Among them is 25-year-old Philemon Obidiah, who earned a degree in Accounting from the University of Benin. He described how years of trauma initially crippled his ability to focus in class. Recalling the brutal attack that separated him from his parents, Obidiah said he struggled emotionally and academically, failing all subjects at first.

“Whenever I sat in class, my thoughts were with my parents. I didn’t know where they were. My first result was all F9s. But with the support and counseling from teachers, I began to improve,” he said. “Eventually, I started making Bs and Cs, and later I began competing for first position.”

Also sharing her journey, 41-year-old Esther Maloko said she had lost all hope of completing her education after stopping at primary six. Encouraged at the camp to return to school, she later gained admission into Western Delta University where she studied Business Administration. She now hopes to build a career in the business sector and help others facing similar hardship.

Another success story is Alhaji Yusuf, who fled to Edo State at the age of 15 and went on to graduate in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. He expressed a desire to return to his community to support the rebuilding of damaged infrastructure, particularly in the telecom sector. “Initially, I just wanted safety—no shootings or guns. But education became my passion,” he stated, highlighting the lack of equipment in the science labs at the camp’s school and calling for support.

The camp’s founder, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, revealed that over 180 IDPs have graduated from universities, with more than 400 currently enrolled in higher institutions across the country. Despite the camp facing rising costs, food shortages, and increasing demand, he said many youths continue to thrive.

“A few months ago, five of our students became medical doctors—four boys and a girl. We also have over 12 nurses and midwives, and even an engineer working in Chicago,” he said.

Folorunsho noted that while some youths pursue academics, others engage in farming or skill acquisition to survive. “We have children who couldn’t continue education but are learning trades to sustain themselves. The need here is growing, especially with food and education.”

The testimonies from the camp serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when opportunity, resilience, and compassion intersect—even in the most difficult circumstances.
