Inside Story: The Real Reasons Behind Sowore’s Prolonged Police Custody!
Amid mounting calls for Omoyele Sowore’s release, the Commissioner of Police for the Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, has explained why the activist remains in detention, according to iReporter Online.
Protesters reportedly stormed the force headquarters on Friday, demanding Sowore’s release after he was invited over allegations of “forgery and inciting disturbance,” iReporter Online reported.
Addressing the crowd, Shogunle revealed that Sowore is being held because he refused to make a statement.
“According to iReporter Online, the two petitions against Omoyele Sowore were presented to him in my presence.
One concerns forgery of a police document he published online, which is a serious legal issue. It is your duty to provide a source of how you obtained the forged document.
The second petition relates to cyberbullying,” he stated.
He further noted, “Both petitions were shown to Sowore in the presence of his lawyers, but he refused to make a statement.
This is on record. Under Nigerian law, when an allegation is made, the accused must respond and put forward their position,” Shogunle explained.
