Tinubu Arrives in Brazil for State Visit, Set to Deepen Nigeria-Brazil Relations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Brasília, Brazil, on a state visit aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s longstanding bilateral relations with the South American nation, according to iReporter Online.

The Nigerian leader touched down at the Brasília Air Base early Monday morning, flying in from Los Angeles, United States.

He was welcomed by senior Brazilian government officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, was also on hand to receive the President.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, it was noted that President Tinubu was later received at his hotel by other Nigerian ministers, heads of key government agencies, and private sector stakeholders who are expected to take part in a series of bilateral meetings and Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) signings during the visit.

The official welcoming ceremony, featuring full military honours, will be held at the Planalto Palace.

There, President Tinubu will meet with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for a private discussion followed by expanded bilateral talks involving senior officials from both governments. Both leaders are also scheduled to witness the signing of multiple MoUs and address a joint press conference.

According to iReporter Online, President Tinubu’s itinerary includes high-level engagements with the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court.

He is also expected to participate in the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum, which aims to boost economic partnerships between both nations.

Nigeria and Brazil have shared warm diplomatic ties since the early 1960s. Nigeria opened its embassy in Brazil in 1966, while Brazil was the only Latin American country present at Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960.

Since Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, diplomatic exchanges between both countries have intensified. In July 2025, he led Nigeria’s delegation to the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro and, in November 2024, attended the G20 Summit in Brazil at the invitation of President Lula.

Recent high-level visits further reflect this growing cooperation. Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and his wife visited Abuja in June 2025 for the Second Session of the Mechanism for Strategic Dialogue.

Earlier in the year, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira visited Abuja, while Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, participated in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Summit in Brazil.

The 2013 MoU establishing the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism between both countries has fostered cooperation in agriculture, trade, defence, energy, education, and more.

The second session of the dialogue in June 2025 led to the signing of seven MoUs covering diverse areas such as tourism, livestock development, counter-narcotics, and renewable energy.

Brazil has also emerged as a key partner in Nigeria’s food security drive. A $2.5 billion agreement with JBS was signed during the 2024 G20 Summit to develop sustainable food supply chains and generate employment for Nigerian youth, according to iReporter Online.

Another flagship initiative, the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme (GIP), launched in 2019, remains on course.

The programme aims to deliver 10,000 tractors and 50,000 units of farm equipment, all to be assembled locally in Nigeria—marking a significant boost to agricultural mechanisation and job creation.
