BREAKING: Amid Political Crisis In Rivers, Chief Judge Pardons Many Inmates In Port Harcourt Correctional Centre (DETAILS)

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, has granted clemency to 53 inmates who were undergoing trial for various offenses at the Port Harcourt Maximum Correctional Centre.

This initiative is part of the activities planned to mark the commencement of the 2023/2024 legal year in the state.

It also serves as a measure to alleviate the overcrowding at the Maximum Correctional Centre in Port Harcourt.

Justice Amadi emphasized that this action aligns with the provisions of section 34 Sub-section 1 of the Criminal Justice Law of Rivers State, as well as the special provision act of the Laws of the Federation. These laws empower the Chief Judge to inspect the correctional facility to determine the number of inmates, the duration of their detention, and identify those eligible for clemency.

Additionally, Justice Amadi took the opportunity to urge the police to conduct thorough investigations before filing charges against a suspect. He remarked, “Sometimes, individuals who commit theft are charged with armed robbery. When people recover their stolen property, they may not be willing to proceed with the case in court.”

Furthermore, he advised the released inmates to maintain good behavior going forward.

“I came here for an exercise just to make you better citizens. No one wants you to die, you have learnt something here. Please, I beg you all to leave evil and cultism. As you go back to the village let the change be seen in you, don’t go back to eat your vomit, go back and find something to do: farm, fish or learn hand work.

“Think for yourself, if you are struggling, people will help you when they see ingenuity in you. Change because you may not have a second chance but if not, it might not be business as usual.”

During his address, the Comptroller of the State Correctional Service, Felix Lawrence, praised the Administration of the criminal justice system in the State for successfully reducing the congestion at the Port-Harcourt Maximum Correctional Service. He disclosed that when he took office in June, there were over 4,000 inmates, but that number has now decreased by a thousand.

The inmates who received clemency were those who had been in the correctional center for five and nine years, respectively. They were also classified as awaiting trial inmates who had not had charges filed against them by the Department of Public Prosecution in the High Court.
