Kenneth Okonkwo Declares PDP, LP ‘Dead Parties’ That Only Exist On Paper
Former spokesperson of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has declared that both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have lost their relevance in Nigeria’s political space, describing them as entities that now exist only on paper.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Okonkwo argued that the parties are no longer functional, pointing instead to recent developments within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as an example of a more structured and effective political body.
According to him, the emergence of a new leadership in the ADC was not a merger but a complete absorption of coalition members into the party. He explained that, for the first time in Nigeria’s history, a national executive committee of a political party stepped aside to allow a new leadership to take over seamlessly, thereby strengthening the party’s foundation.
Okonkwo stressed that PDP and LP have effectively collapsed, insisting that many of their members now openly support either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the ADC. He maintained that once leaders of a party declare allegiance to candidates from rival platforms ahead of an election, such a party ceases to exist in practical terms.
“Strictly speaking, there is no longer any real party like PDP or LP. They survive only on paper. Political parties are meant to serve the people, but when their leaders cross over to other camps, the structures collapse,” he said.
