Excitement Builds As Kano Welcomes The 2025 International Polo Fiesta
In anticipation of the much-awaited 2025 Kano International Polo Tournament, the ancient city of Kano is buzzing with excitement. Regarded as the most prominent sporting event in the city’s calendar, the tournament will take place at the iconic Usman Dantata Polo Ground in Bompai, running from the third week of September through the first week of October.
Kano Polo Club Chairman, Tajudeen Dantata, disclosed that preparations are in full swing, with various committees working tirelessly to ensure this year’s edition ranks among the most memorable in the history of the prestigious event. He assured that the tournament would once again deliver immense value to sponsors, partners, patrons, competing teams, and the thousands of enthusiasts who have consistently made the polo festival a highlight of the season.
Widely considered one of the most prestigious polo tournaments in Nigeria, alongside those in Lagos, Kaduna, and Katsina, the Kano International Polo Tournament is famed for its coveted trophies, with players aspiring to etch their names in history by winning the revered Emir of Kano Cup and the Dantata Cup.
According to Dantata, the passion and commitment to promoting polo, the oldest team sport in the world, remains unwavering, with Kano continuing to play a central role in advancing the game across the country. This year’s event will feature glittering prizes, with the Emir of Kano Cup standing as the most sought-after honor. Other prizes up for grabs include the Dangote Cup, MRS Cup, Usman Dantata Cup, Audu Lukat Cup, Muhammadu Sanusi Cup, and the Murtala Mohammed Cup, among several others.
A visit to Kano ahead of the tournament revealed a major facelift at the club, while grooms are hard at work preparing the ponies for action. Organizers hinted at fresh innovations for this year’s edition, including the introduction of new trophies to further elevate the competition.
Since its inception in the early 1930s, the Kano International Polo Tournament has steadily grown into one of Africa’s most glamorous sporting spectacles, attracting royalties, business magnates, diplomats, and polo lovers from across the globe. Top players from Europe, Argentina, and South Africa regularly grace the event, while Kano continues to showcase a strong lineup of players drawn from royal families and the business community with deep-rooted ties to the game.
Organizers are optimistic about recording an even larger spectator turnout this year, while also creating more opportunities for homegrown players to shine. “The level of interest from participating teams is very inspiring, and we expect this season to deliver one of the most competitive and thrilling editions yet,” Dantata affirmed.
Last year’s edition saw Kano Golden Alchemy, Kano SMR/BUA, Katsina Danmarna, and Kano Rumbu/Almuazzam emerge as champions across various categories. The Sadiq Audu Dantata-led Golden Alchemy team triumphed over strong rivals, while Katsina Danmarna, captained by Ibrahim Sarki, clinched their first-ever Emir of Kano Cup. Kano Rumbu, managed by Habib Buhari—who also served as Tournament Manager—secured the prestigious Dantata Cup, marking their second major title in three years.
One of the standout highlights of last year’s event was the historic all-female polo match, which captivated the crowd and underscored the tournament’s growing legacy. With expectations running high, more thrilling moments are anticipated at this year’s fiesta, promising an unforgettable celebration of the “game of kings.”
