According to Ireporter Online, members of the Kwankwasiyya movement are reportedly considering a shift to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as they seek greater access to federal projects and developmental benefits.

Yusuf Sharada, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Digital Economy, explained in an interview on The Morning Brief that Kano State has faced challenges in securing certain federal initiatives due to its alignment with the opposition party at the national level. He noted that while the state continues to receive its statutory allocation, it remains insufficient to meet its developmental needs.

Sharada emphasized that the desire to attract more projects and resources has become a major factor behind discussions on possible defections. He also highlighted concerns over ongoing internal disputes within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.

Referring to recent political developments in Zamfara, Sharada said, “We want to have a safer platform that will allow all our elective office holders to contest yet another election and, if given a mandate by the people, continue administering the state.”

While clarifying that Kano State has not been entirely denied its rights by the Federal Government, the aide acknowledged that being in opposition naturally comes with limitations. “There are things that are your right, and there are things you are privileged to get because you align with people at the centre,” he added.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, also known as the ‘Red Cap Revolution’, was founded by former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. Sharada’s comments coincide with reports that Governor Abba Yusuf may be considering a defection from the NNPP to the APC.
