An Uneducated King Holds No Value” – Muhammadu Sanusi

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has clarified that his decision to pursue a law degree was not influenced by ongoing legal matters but was instead aimed at inspiring others to prioritise education. Speaking during the Hawan Nasarawa Durbar held at the Government House in Kano as part of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the monarch emphasised that education remains more important than traditional titles, noting that knowledge strengthens leadership capacity and earns greater societal respect.

According to reports, Sanusi urged critics to understand that his return to school was intended to set an example, stressing that learning should come before kingship. He further highlighted the role of education in enhancing the dignity of traditional rulers, stating that a king who is educated commands greater value, while one without education diminishes the worth of the throne.

The emir also expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for the recognition and honour extended to the emirate, describing the gesture as commendable.

Meanwhile, the Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Kano was marked by an unusual development as three separate prayers were held across the city, underscoring deepening divisions among traditional and political leaders. This departure from the long-standing practice of a unified Eid prayer reflects the lingering crisis within the emirate system.

Reports indicate that Sanusi led prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground, attended by key government officials including Governor Abba Yusuf and other top dignitaries, with messages centred on unity and peaceful coexistence. At the same time, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, conducted a separate prayer at the Nasarawa Palace, where clerics also emphasised peace and stability.

In a parallel gathering, Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, held another Eid prayer at his residence mosque, joined by political allies in what was described as an atmosphere of unity and gratitude.

The development highlights the ongoing emirate dispute, which began with the removal of Sanusi in 2020 and the installation of Bayero, and was further complicated by Sanusi’s reinstatement in 2024, resulting in parallel traditional authorities. Political shifts, including recent alignments within major parties, have also contributed to the division.

Historically, Eid prayers in Kano were observed as a single, unified event at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground, bringing together traditional rulers, political leaders, and residents in a shared act of worship.
