This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Honoring Yusuf Maitama Sule

The renaming of the institution is intended to honor the late Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Sule for his contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development throughout his career.

Tinubu emphasized that immortalizing Sule’s legacy would serve as an inspiration for younger generations to uphold values such as integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism.

Who Was Yusuf Maitama Sule?

• Born in 1929 and passed away in 2017.
• Served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.
• Held key political roles, including:
  • Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959).
  • Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960).
  • Minister of Mines and Power.
  • First Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints (1976).

University’s Role in Nigeria’s Education Sector

The Federal University of Education, Kano, was initially owned by the Kano State Government before it became a federal institution. It remains one of seven specialized universities of education under the Federal Government.

According to the statement, the institution will continue to play a pivotal role in training teachers and strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.
