Enekwechi Makes History, Becomes Nigeria’s First Commonwealth Games Shot Put Champion

According to Ireporter Online, Enekwechi achieved the remarkable feat in Glasgow with a championship-winning throw of 21.07 metres, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s athletics history.

Speaking after his victory, the 33-year-old athlete expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged the challenges he overcame on his journey to the top.

“I have worked extremely hard for this moment, and there were times when I even doubted myself, but I never stopped believing,” Enekwechi said.

The champion added that the triumph helped erase the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, describing the achievement as a major confidence boost ahead of future competitions.

“This victory means so much because it wipes away the disappointment of Birmingham. It puts me in a very good place mentally and gives me confidence for what is ahead,” he added.

Enekwechi’s historic achievement has further strengthened Team Nigeria’s impressive performance at the Glasgow Games, helping the country maintain fifth position on the overall medal table and remain the highest-ranked African nation in the competition.

Nigeria has so far secured 18 medals, comprising nine gold, six silver and three bronze, with Enekwechi’s victory adding to a series of outstanding displays by Nigerian athletes.

Australia currently leads the medal standings with 128 medals, including 55 gold, 30 silver and 43 bronze medals, while England and Canada occupy the second and third positions with 80 and 53 medals respectively. Host nation Scotland sits fourth with 34 medals, just ahead of Nigeria.

New Zealand ranks sixth, followed by South Africa, while Malaysia, Wales and India complete the top ten on the table.

Only 38 of the 74 participating Commonwealth Games Associations have won medals so far, with several countries still seeking their first podium finish as the competition approaches its conclusion.

Nigeria continues to lead the African medal rankings ahead of South Africa, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, Mauritius, Namibia, Zambia and Lesotho, as the Games move towards the closing ceremony.
