UEFA Declares War On Infantino After FIFA Investment Plan Collapse
UEFA has expressed a loss of confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino following the collapse of the proposed investment plan that would have seen private investors acquire stakes in FIFA competitions.
According to Ireporter Online, the European football governing body made the statement on Saturday after FIFA officially announced the withdrawal of the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise project, which had attracted strong opposition from several football stakeholders worldwide.
UEFA described FIFA’s decision to abandon the proposal as a positive development for global football but accused Infantino of failing to uphold commitments he made when he campaigned for the FIFA presidency in 2016.
The organisation claimed that the current FIFA leadership had lost the trust of UEFA and several other members of the international football community.
UEFA recalled Infantino’s previous promises on transparency and financial accountability, arguing that the proposed investment deal contradicted those commitments.
The European body criticised the plan as lacking openness and claimed it was developed without sufficient consultation with football stakeholders.
UEFA warned that football should not be subjected to what it described as secret arrangements and rushed decisions that could affect the future of the sport.
The organisation also called for those responsible for developing the proposal to be identified and held accountable.
Despite welcoming the withdrawal of the plan, UEFA said the move should only mark the beginning of efforts to restore confidence in FIFA’s leadership.
The body pledged to work with national football associations and other confederations to prevent similar situations in the future while supporting reforms to improve the distribution of football development funds.
UEFA further argued that FIFA should focus on using its existing financial resources to support grassroots football rather than seeking external investment through controversial arrangements.
The latest disagreement has increased pressure on Infantino ahead of the FIFA Congress scheduled for March, where the FIFA president is expected to pursue another term in office.
