According to Ireporter Online, Nigerian international Ademola Lookman played a decisive role as Atletico Madrid secured a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League following a 2-1 victory over Osasuna at Estadio El Sadar on Wednesday night, May 12.

The win guarantees Diego Simeone’s side a top-four finish in La Liga with two games remaining in the season.

Lookman opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 15th minute after Osasuna defender Javi Galán was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. A VAR review confirmed the incident, and the Nigerian forward calmly converted to register his eighth league goal of the campaign.

The winger put in an energetic performance throughout the match, winning three fouls, completing all his attempted dribbles, and emerging victorious in five of seven ground duels. He recorded one shot on target, which resulted in the goal, and posted an expected goals (xG) figure of 0.79. His passing in the opposition half was also impressive, with a 90 percent accuracy rate as Atletico managed proceedings after taking the lead.

The goal marked a return to scoring form for Lookman, who had endured a quiet spell in recent weeks despite earlier strikes in Atletico’s Champions League quarter-final win over Barcelona and the Copa del Rey final loss to Real Sociedad. He had also struggled to find the net in matches against Arsenal and Celta Vigo.

The result lifts Atletico Madrid to 66 points, putting them six points ahead of fifth-placed Real Betis and three behind Villarreal in third position.

Lookman now has eight goals and three assists in 23 La Liga appearances this season, with Atletico set to face Girona next before concluding their campaign away at Villarreal on May 24.
