CAF Drops Tough New Rules After AFCON 2025 Final Chaos

According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, CAF President Patrice Motsepe acknowledged that shortcomings in officiating and match management contributed to the chaotic conclusion of the tournament’s final.

The dramatic showdown in Rabat initially ended with Senegal being declared champions after securing a 1-0 extra-time victory over Morocco. However, the result was later overturned by CAF’s appeal board, which awarded the title to the host nation following disciplinary findings related to Senegal’s protest walk-off after a controversial late Video Assistant Referee (VAR) penalty decision.

The match generated widespread condemnation amid clashes involving security personnel inside the stadium and allegations of unsporting conduct. One of the most talked-about incidents was the so-called “Towelgate” controversy, which involved Senegal’s goalkeeper and ball boys.

In an interview with BBC Sport Africa, Motsepe disclosed that CAF had completed an internal review into the events of the final and identified several areas requiring urgent reforms.

He noted that while CAF has made progress in restoring confidence in referees and VAR technology, the governing body recognized critical deficiencies that contributed to the incidents witnessed in Morocco. He stated that new laws and regulations have now been introduced to ensure a similar situation does not occur in future competitions.

Motsepe further stressed that efforts are ongoing to improve officiating standards and ensure greater consistency in the use of VAR across the continent. He emphasized that African football must continue to uphold the highest standards of fairness and integrity.

Meanwhile, the Senegal Football Federation has strongly criticized CAF’s decision, describing it as a “robbery,” and has filed an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport. A final verdict on the matter is still being awaited.

Motsepe said CAF would respect and implement whatever ruling is delivered by the court.

CAF stated that the newly introduced measures will focus on tighter VAR governance, enhanced security coordination, and clearer disciplinary protocols to prevent a recurrence of the disorder that overshadowed one of the most controversial finals in the history of African football.
