Wike To Nigerians: You Want Better Roads And Infrastructure, But Refuse To Pay Tax

Speaking on Wednesday during an inspection of ongoing road projects in the FCT, the former Rivers State governor emphasized that taxation remains essential to the development of any society.

According to reports, Wike said Nigerians are often quick to criticize tax authorities whenever collection efforts are intensified, despite expecting government to provide modern roads, bridges and other basic infrastructure.

He noted that although he was not attempting to defend the Abuja Municipal Area Council over complaints relating to tax enforcement, there must be a civilized and lawful approach to revenue collection. He added that no formal report of misconduct had been brought to his attention, but assured that appropriate action would be taken if any credible complaints were received.

Wike maintained that the country cannot continue to provide public amenities without citizens contributing through taxes.

In his words, Nigerians want good infrastructure but do not want to pay taxes, while expecting government to provide everything free of charge.

The minister also addressed reactions to his recent visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda.

Wike explained that the meeting was a private visit rather than a political engagement, stressing that he does not believe political differences should turn opponents into enemies.

He said long-standing personal relationships should not be abandoned because of party affiliations, adding that politics should not prevent individuals from maintaining cordial and respectful friendships across party lines.
