Tiwa Savage: “I Miss Running To Don Jazzy’s Room To Cry
According to Ireporter Online, Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has revealed that she did not fully understand the importance of a record label to an artist’s mental health and emotional stability until after her departure from Mavin Records.
The award-winning singer, who joined Mavin Records in 2012 and exited in 2019 before signing with Universal Music Group, noted that although she has maintained a cordial relationship with her former label, she now recognizes the deeper personal support system it once provided.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, Savage explained that the environment at Mavin Records played a significant role in helping her cope with public pressure and personal challenges. She recalled moments when she would seek comfort from the label boss, Don Jazzy, and fellow signees during difficult times, describing the experience as a form of emotional relief and solidarity.
She contrasted that experience with her current situation under an international label, stating that such personal interactions are limited. According to her, the new arrangement feels more corporate, with less emotional engagement, making it difficult to access the same level of support she once had.
Tiwa Savage further emphasized the need for upcoming artists to carefully evaluate record labels beyond financial considerations, stressing the importance of emotional care and genuine concern for artists’ wellbeing.
She was quoted as saying that at Mavin, she could walk into Don Jazzy’s office during controversies, share her frustrations, cry if necessary, and receive comfort from the team, a support system she now misses in her current setup.
