Barcelona’s Fermin López Sidelined Ahead Of 2026 World Cup

According to Ireporter Online, Spanish midfielder Fermin López has been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup after suffering a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot during FC Barcelona’s 3–1 victory over Real Betis on Sunday. The 23-year-old was forced off at half-time and later underwent successful surgery, with the club confirming the procedure went well but withholding a timeline for his return.

The injury has also ended his chances of making Spain’s final tournament squad, as he was widely expected to be included by national team coach Luis de la Fuente for the competition set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Spain’s squad announcement is scheduled for Monday, with the team set to open their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on June 15, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

López later expressed his disappointment in an emotional message shared on social media, acknowledging the setback and confirming he would miss the tournament, while vowing to return stronger. Despite the setback, he had enjoyed a breakthrough season under Hansi Flick, scoring 13 goals and registering 17 assists in 48 appearances as Barcelona secured the La Liga title. He also ranked among the club’s most influential creators, matching Lamine Yamal in assists, while making seven senior appearances for Spain and featuring in their Euro 2024 triumph.
