This Is Not Good News” – AAC Rejects Sowore’s Trial Suspension
The African Action Congress (AAC) has rejected the reported decision to suspend the prosecution of its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, until after the 2027 presidential election.
According to Ireporter Online, the party argued that suspending the case was not an acceptable resolution and called for the prosecution to be formally discontinued rather than kept pending.
The AAC also demanded the immediate removal of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Ajayi, accusing the agency of subjecting Sowore to what it described as political harassment, persecution and violations of his fundamental rights.
The party made its position known in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu.
The AAC questioned the legal basis for placing a criminal trial on indefinite suspension, arguing that such an arrangement could leave the accused under prolonged legal uncertainty.
The party maintained that the appropriate legal option was for the prosecution to discontinue the case rather than suspend proceedings and potentially revive them at a later date.
It further alleged that the case against Sowore was politically motivated and linked to his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The opposition party consequently called on the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue the prosecution and ensure that the case could not be brought back after the 2027 election for political purposes.
The AAC also demanded an apology and compensation for Sowore, citing the legal expenses, time and disruption it said he had endured as a result of the prosecution.
In addition, the party urged the DSS to comply with any outstanding court orders imposing financial penalties or costs against the agency in connection with the matter.
The AAC maintained that merely suspending the case would not resolve what it described as an abuse of state power and insisted that the prosecution should be brought to a formal end.
