Money Laundering: Fresh Headache For Okupe As Labour Party May Consider Replacing Him As Obi’s Campaign DG (DETAILS)
According to Channels Television, there are indications that the Labour Party (LP) may replace Doyin Okupe as Director-General of its 2023 Presidential Campaign Council.
An unbiased source within the party confirmed to Channels Television on Monday that negotiations to replace Okupe are already underway.
The source, however, stated that the decision will be made collaboratively by all parties involved, including Okupe himself.
Although he refused to name potential replacements, former presidential aide Akin Oshuntokun is widely regarded as the front-runner to replace Okupe.
Okupe was earlier found guilty on Monday by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja of receiving over N200 million in cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki.
Justice Ojukwu ruled that Okupe’s actions, as the first defendant in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) suit, violated the Money Laundering Act.
While stating that the Act provides that no individual or organization shall receive any sum above N5 million and N10 million respectively without passing through a financial institution, the judge held that “there is no evidence that the money passed through a financial institution”.
As a result, the court ruled that the first defendant, Dr. Okupe, was guilty in counts 34, 35, 36, and 59.
The Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), in a statement issued earlier by its Media Officer, Diran Onifade, confirmed that Okupe had paid the N13 million fine imposed by the court.
He stated that as the party that upholds the rule of law, its officials will promptly obey court judgments.
However, Onifade stated that appealing the judgment is a personal decision made by Okupe that the PCC cannot influence.
