A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has declared that the 2027 presidential election is likely to be a straight contest between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking during an interview on News Central Television on Thursday, Showunmi maintained that the political landscape ahead of the next general election currently favours Tinubu and Atiku as the leading contenders for the presidency.

He explained that, based on his observations of the major political figures positioning for the election, the race appears to be narrowing down to both politicians, expressing confidence that one of them would eventually emerge victorious.

According to reports monitored by IReporter Online, Showunmi also defended Atiku’s leadership credentials, noting that his past experience as the former vice president’s spokesperson gave him insight into Atiku’s ideas and vision for the country.

The PDP chieftain further stated that he had closely followed Nigeria’s political and governance journey since 2019, particularly the ongoing efforts aimed at restructuring and recalibrating the country’s systems.

Showunmi, however, dismissed the chances of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, insisting that he had not seen any convincing proposals from Obi regarding national security or social stability.

He argued that despite Obi’s growing popularity, he was yet to hear him articulate concrete plans on tackling Nigeria’s security challenges or addressing broader issues affecting national cohesion and stability.
