5 Modern Cars That Still Love Buttons Over Touchscreens
According to Ireporter Online, while touchscreens have become a hallmark of modern vehicle design, many drivers are raising concerns over their practicality when they replace essential physical controls. Critics argue that screen-dominated dashboards can make driving more distracting and less intuitive, emphasizing aesthetics over safety and usability.
Large infotainment displays, once seen as a symbol of convenience and modernity, have sparked debate among motorists. Features such as climate controls hidden in menus, glossy surfaces prone to fingerprints, and slow interfaces often complicate simple adjustments, potentially putting drivers at risk.
Despite the industry’s push toward bigger screens and fewer switches, several automakers continue to integrate tactile controls alongside modern technology. These vehicles retain clearly marked buttons and knobs for key functions, allowing drivers to operate them without diverting attention from the road. Such designs respect muscle memory, prioritize safety, and provide practical alternatives to fully touchscreen-based interfaces.
Among the notable models preserving physical controls are the Mazda CX-50, which disables touch input while driving and relies on a rotary dial and shortcut buttons; the Mercedes-Benz G550, which combines dual displays with a centre touchpad and dedicated switches for climate and off-road functions; the Honda Civic, offering large climate dials and intuitive steering wheel controls alongside its touchscreen; the Nissan Frontier, with chunky knobs and clearly labelled buttons designed for straightforward operation even with gloves on; and the Ford Maverick, whose user-friendly cabin balances a central display with accessible physical controls for essential functions. These vehicles demonstrate that tactile feedback and modern technology can coexist, delivering both style and functionality.
